Microsoft Reference Setup Troubleshooter

Make sure the compact disc is not dirty.

Try cleaning the compact disc to remove fingerprints, smudges, and dust. These can often cause read problems on compact discs.

  • Gently wipe the silver side of the disc with a soft, lint-free cotton cloth. Do not use paper cloth, which may scratch the plastic or leave streaks.

  • Wipe from the center out. Don't use a circular motion.

After cleaning the compact disc, try running the program again.

Test The Compact Disc

To test for a bad compact disc, try to use the CD on another computer. If the other computer is also unable to read the disc, return the program to the store for a replacement package.

If the other computer can read the compact disc, then the disc itself is not defective. Your CD-ROM drive may need cleaning. Microsoft suggests using a commercially available CD-ROM lens-cleaning disc. These cleaning discs are sold at computer and stereo stores, and are labeled for use with CD-ROM drives and music CD players.

If the compact disc can be read by other computers, but cannot be read by your CD-ROM drive, and cleaning the CD-ROM drive does not resolve the problem, contact your hardware manufacturer for troubleshooting of the CD-ROM driver software or configuration of the drive options.

A final alternative is to consider returning the program to the store. Many Microsoft products have a 30-day Money-Back Guarantee. Return policy details are printed on the back of the program box.
